An
Inclusive Park in the City of Markham

“OpenCity’s research helped us to understand needs and cultures. We are proud of the groundbreaking results — a park that is truly designed for diversity.”

— Linda Irvine, Parks and Open Space Development, City of Markham

Markham’s planning department asked OpenCity to help design a new park in the Leitchcroft neighbourhood, one of Markham’s fastest growing new communities. Markham is a major destination for Canadian newcomers. With nearly 60% of residents born outside of the country, it is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Our challenge was to create a public space that would attract a wide range of residents from many different cultures.

After engaging with the community in an ongoing dialogue, running co-creation workshops and presenting our placemaking strategy to city council, we had a unanimous mandate to implement all of our design recommendations. Working with our partner Andrew Jones to design beautiful shade structures, and provide creative direction for a cohesive park experience, the space transformed into a cultural hub for the neighborhood. Today Ada Mackenzie Park, known to residents as Leitchcroft Park, is a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy.
