Portland Oregon Jantzen Beach/ 800 acres of Open wildlife space being threatened / city wants to dump contaminated river-bottom dredgings on our island and then pave it over to become another port/ I am looking for help to show the city council that there are other ways to encourage profitable businesses and yet retain the wildlife( eagles nest; geese; ducks; egrets; white-billed coots; osprey; beavers; etc). The acreage comprises the entire west end of Hayden Island; google Hayden Island to see our wonderful place to live on the border of Vancouver, Wa. and the point of entry to Oregon!
Thank you! Any ideas are welcome regarding your expertise in creating vibrant open spaces next to industrial ones! jeffgeisler@msn.com

This is a great idea! I have 2 more abandoned shelters for u (that the city
info line says are not being removed because "bike lanes are only a TRIAL!!")

One is in a prominent place on Burrard (between Harwood & Pacific) and
tourists find it really confusing. I see them sitting there waiting for a bus
many times per week. (The other is on Hornby @ Beach.) Translink says
only City can move them. Result is that folks actually waiting for bus are out in
the rain and the shelters sit -- unused-- a block away. Absurd!

Great piece Jake!
I'm also one of those weird tourists who notices landscaping details in cities. Like you, I lament the clunky concrete boxes Toronto has put around trees. You captured it perfectly when you say that the trees are 'entombed.'

I appreciate grass-roots effort to try to improve the appearance of the concrete, through painting murals, colourful plantings, but it seems like an awkward band-aid for an ill-conceived design approach. Wouldn't it be great Toronto could start with a simple, elegant solution to protect our trees like some of the examples you've provided?

Hi Annie,

Thanks for the note. I have never been to that part of the world and have not experienced those fire pits. I would love to try that food, especially at 4 AM.
