Jonathan
Jonathan Friedman is an intern architect currently living in Toronto, Canada. In 2008 he founded re:THINK Design to focus on high-quality, contemporary residential design. Although focused primarily on architecture, his approach to design has always been driven by a deep examination and understanding of the site. As an architect, the challenge is not simply to create a moving internal environment, but also to ensure that the building is a good, responsible neighbour and contributes positively to the (mostly urban) environment.
Most recently, Jonathan was a valued member of HOK Architects, working on projects both large and small in scale – the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games, Humber College Building ‘L’, a redevelopment of sensitive land beside a historic church in Ottawa and urban design projects in Saudi Arabia and Bolivia. In addition, he has several years experience working with award-winning firms on many outstanding projects, including the highly regarded Wychwood Barns.
Born and raised in South Africa, Jonathan has lived and traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America.
Jonathan is a member of the Ontario Architects Association and is in the final stage of becoming a licensed architect. In addition, he is a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Urban Land Institute, where he was a 2010/11 Young Leader. Jonathan has taught and been a design critic at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.
Jonathan holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the University in Waterloo and a pre-architecture undergraduate degree (Honours Bathelor’s in Environmental Studies.) He has won numerous design competitions and awards, including the RAIC Gold Medal for Outstanding Master’s Thesis. He has also had design work, photography and installation art exhibited in Toronto, London and Venice.
