OpenCity Weekly Review

Here’s our weekly review rounding up the best stories and ideas in public space from around the world. This week we bring you the best subway maps in the world, a children’s playground in an industrial park in Madrid, Vancouver’s colourful new roof for its BC Place stadium, followed by a discussion of what to do with the site around it.

  • The World’s Best Subway Maps
  • Some are just one or two lines intersecting, while others are a complex spider web of colours. This compilation takes the best in subway map design from around the world, from the ultra-simplistic map in Buffalo to the head-spinning map of Tokyo’s system, pictured above. (via Atlantic Cities)
  • Ecopolis Plaza
  • A children’s park in an industrial park? Here in Madrid, architects Ecosistema Urbano find a way to reuse this industrial space in order to help educate children on the importance of reducing energy consumption. With slides of course. (via Buildipedia)
  • BC Place Shows Off her $563 Million Makeover
  • The stadium that held the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics got a makeover, removing the marshmallow-esque air supported dome in favour of a slender crown. A new LED light system makes sure that no one will be able to miss the transformation. Check out two videos of the LED system here and here. (via OpenFile Vancouver)
  • Site Next to BC Place a ‘Limbo’ Zone
  • BC Place may have a new-fangled roof, but there is still discussion of what is going to happen on the land adjacent to the site, which consists now mostly of surface parking. This leads us to wonder how cities around the world integrate large downtown stadiums into the urban fabric successfully? (via The Globe and Mail)
